Environmental laws not being implemented, says Chief Justice of Meghalaya HC

Meghalaya High Court Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee said there was a lack of implementation of environmental laws.

The Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court has expressed regret over the lack of implementation of environmental laws, although there are several.

“We cannot fight nature and survive,” Meghalaya High Court Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee said.

Banerjee added: “Earth has been around for over 4 billion years and humans for around 300,000 years. However, humans have destroyed over 3 million terrestrial species to satisfy their needs.

The Chief Justice of Meghalaya made the statement during an orientation program on forest and wildlife conservation laws for Meghalaya’s judiciary.

Banerjee further said that the judiciary has contributed to environmental and wildlife conservation.

They stressed the need to implement environmental protection laws.

He said environmental laws must be implemented to ensure that the pristine beauty of Meghalaya is not destroyed.
